Setting up a composting system

I definately need to get myself organised with composting. At the moment I do not have a compost heap at all. What I need to know is:

1. What have you found the best type of bin to use?

2. What do you put in it?

3. Do you turn your compost?

4. How long do you have to wait for something decent to come out of the other end?

I had some of these gorgous plants last summer, they mingled with other plants in the borders in a most delightful way. I left them in over winter, but also collected seeds which I sowed earlier this Spring.

Dismal failure on both counts. No sign of the plants in the borders, and the seed just didn't germinate. So I've bought some more from the local GC (£1 each - not bad, I thought).

Has anyone had any success propagating them?

Do you cut yours back?

I have a brick planter which was full of Tulips, now they are dying off. Can I cut them back to soil level as I want to plant other things now?

I bought a couple of packs (2 for the price of 1) at the GC last weekend. Now I know why they were selling them off cheaply - they should have been planted in February!

Is it too late to start them off now? They do have shoots.

I looked at my ancient plastic window-boxes and decided maybe I should replace them this year. I'd really like something sturdier as the plastic ones tend to distort. They're also uncleanable now and have not aged gracefully.

Terracotta, while I like it, weighs a ton so is out for reasons both of safety and my inability to lift it when it's full! Plus I'd never be able to keep up with watering the west-facing ones.

I've noticed quite a lot of metal...

Hello all, whilst walking around the garden, nose to ground as you do, I happened to notice that our Christmas Rose now has big fat seed heads.

Can you tell me if these seeds can be sown now, and any special requirements. I'm not bothered about coming true to type.

A friend has got me involved in sourcing the history of Nairn families so that people ,whose families were originally from Nairn , can find out details through the local museum. We spend quite a bit of our time going round cemetaries annoting inscriptions and whilst doing it we have noted how many yew trees there are in churchyards . Does anyone know why yew trees and churchyards go together ?

When instructions say "plant bulbs 10cm deep", does this mean to make a hole 10 cm deep and put the bulb in, or does it mean to make a hole and plant the bulb so it has 10 cm of soil above it?
