I&#39;m wondering how to tell when the stems are ready to be picked. Do they have to be a particular colour/length etc to be &quot;ripe&quot;?

			<description><![CDATA[ We last went down there about 3 days ago .. since then the peas have come through, the cucumber seedlings are nearly all through, there are hundreds of flowers
on the strawberries, the swede seedlings are through <img src="http://www.realgardeners.co.uk/images/smileys/hyper.gif"> and lots of the potatoes are making an appearance (they did go in a little late!)

I put my onion sets in last November, which is what they do here. I have two varieties, red ones and  yellow ones. Now some of them are starting to have flower
shoots - should I take them off? Is there something I should do which would stop them flowering? None of the books I have say anything about this, they just

			<title><![CDATA[ Broccoli seeds ]]></title>

			<description><![CDATA[ I planted some purple sprouting broc seeds last week in the propogator, in Arthur Bowers seedling compost, mixed with vermiculite and put them in the heated
propogator on a sunny windowsill.  I have watered them lightly since and checked them regularly. On checking them this morning I noticed the seedlings had come
through and they were all white and furry ... damped off!

Everthing was cleaned, and the compost and vermuculite were both new.

This was taken last week, even after the first gales... grown from a pip... byt the Plot Holder, about 50 yrs old.. makes good apple sauce tastes a bit cox-ish
and is still edible.. I tried one!
