Visiting a 'Pygmanian' Nursery today I picked up an interesting free gardening magazine that had an article on Penstemons, giving the addresses of two
national collections.

Yes I occasionally pick up that one, there is another one down here to 'Cornish Gardener', but that one contains loads of adverts, bit an interesting article or two sometimes.

Jake,
Funnily enough I have been to see a national penstemon collection in Dorset it was in a country house, name escapes me at the moment. I have hetrophylia blue, its a very low growing ground cover penstemon that flowers quite early. Quite short lived, so need to keep taking cuttings. I will do some later in the summer would you like a couple?? Pens |

Pens have a look at JIm Caves Website (he's the chap who is selling his nursery) he has some lovely penstemons, there might be something that interests you, I'll be there in a couple of weeks, so if you want anything I could pick it up - or even better come for a day out.

Pens,
Interested to read your description of P. heterophyllus and wonder if my plant is misnamed. It's in an 9" pot with rathr lax growth which I put down to being in among so many others, as the label reads " Striking Blue trumpet shaped flowers 50cm high carried in abundance this vigorous Herbaceous Perennial" I was forgetting to say I've been interested in Penstomens for years, but lost most of them have transplanted them when reorganising my garden just before that prolonged bad weather, so yes, I would be interested if you have some. In the meantime I'll take plenty cuttings of Heterophus DeeDee, I went to www.cornwallgardens.com and clicked on "P" but nowt came up. Am I looking in the right place please? OJ |

Jake,
Have just checked Google and the plants they show are the same as mine. They do look 'lax' as they lie low in the ground naturally. I believe they grow in the foothills of mountains naturally, and sort of scramble accross rocks etc. They have a lovely vivid blue/purple colour. Later in the summer I will be taking loads of cuttings so I will send you a list. Pens PS See you tomorrow DeeDee!! |
