I looked at my ancient plastic window-boxes and decided maybe I should replace them this year. I'd really like something sturdier as the plastic ones tend to distort. They're also uncleanable now and have not aged gracefully.
Terracotta, while I like it, weighs a ton so is out for reasons both of safety and my inability to lift it when it's full! Plus I'd never be able to keep up with watering the west-facing ones.
I've noticed quite a lot of metal ones around, which is attractive on the face of it. But do they overheat the roots? And I notice they have no holes in the bottom - would I have to drill some?
I think they also have some fake-stone ones (haven't tried lifting those yet).
Does anyone have any recommendations, bearing in mind that mine have to hang on the balcony railings?
