I had to laugh at her first question "Do you need paper to send an email?"
I know I shouldn't laugh, cos it's a perfectly reasonable question if you know nothing at all about computers. I've a feeling there's going to be some good'uns coming up

Took my mum's computer round to her yesterday. She's absolutely terrified of learning to use it and has requested I get her some library books to read before we start doing anything.

Aaaaw. Sal surley there is a class she could go to. My mum went to the library for a short course. Perhaps you might give her my number so if anything happens after you've gone I or Dave might be able to talk her through
. I know I'm not brilliant but the guys on here will help me out. Just an idea![]() ![]() |

Awww, thanks for the offer Kitty. I don't think she could cope with any kind of course at the moment as she's suffering badly from depression. I might think about sending her partner on one though

Why don't you send several Remote Assistance invitations to yourself from her machine and stow them on the little machine you're taking with you, theory being that you can get into her machine if stuff goes wrong.

Great suggestion Laurel, but I don't think little lappy (being Linux) can do that.
Perhaps you could help me out here Laurel - mum is on BTs Light User Scheme - this means that her last quarterly phone bill including line rental was only 13! Obviously she's very keen to keep this, but BT tell me that she can't have broadband with this option. I've checked out O2, Virgin, Orange, PlusNet and various other providers and they tell me the same thing - no broadband without paying BT's Option 1 Line rental, which is 11 per month, plus the broadband fees. Do you know whether there's any way around this? If not, it looks like I'm going to have to sort dial up or it will just be too expensive for her. ![]() |

One of the best deals I have seen at the moment is the Post Office option
www.postoffice.co.uk/port...d=58000699 Which is 21.95 a month including line rental, broadband and evening and weekend calls for free. If you are going down the dial up route, freeola do a pay as you go option, using a 0845 number, the only thing to remember is that if she ends up using the internet a lot, she will probably "break" her light user limits. |

Sorry, Sal - LUS is not compatible with having broadband. Not sure of the exact reasoning but I would imagine that they think in general that a broadband user would not be a 'light' user. Though, of course, there may be a more technical reason for it. Shame if she's confined to dial up as I would think it'll limit the pictures you can send her.

Thanks Laurel. I've called BT twice about this now. The first guy said it was no prob to have broadband with the LUS. The second one was adamant that she couldn't have it without changing to a minimum of Option 1 Line Rental (and he went and checked with a senior manager
Tis indeed a pain but it's looking like she's probably going to have to have dial up because she definitely won't pay that much more for something she doesn't even believe she's going to use. (This time next year may be a different story I'm looking at freeola - thanks Jane. *Shudders at the thought of teaching her mum to use a computer whilst suffering a dial-up connection for the first time in 5 years *![]() |

Is there a library anywhere near to hand. You can use broadband for free in there. There are limitations, of course, but a helping hand would be with her too.
