Oooh, sounds interesting Beth. Never heard of cordylines flowering. How old is it? I have a red one that's about 6 years old now. It's getting to be a good size.

You could know this as a number of things Torquay palm , Cabbage Tree it goes on and on . Most people seem to use this as a centerpiece to their planters. Get them in the soil, sit back and be amazed . They are fast growing flower and look even better after they flower as they branch. They are reasonably cheap to buy so buy a few and dot them about.
this is what I found was looking for a photo but can't find any yet ![]() |

I've been a bit cautious about planting mine out Lynne. The gardening programmes are always wittering on about cordylines not being hardy and the need to bring them in for the winter.
Although mine stays outdoors, it is in the most sheltered corner of a south-facing patio right next to the house well and gets bubble wrapped during the worst of the winter wet. I wouldn't like to lose it as I've had it a while. Do they get hardier as they get older? xx-Sal-xx ![]() |

Great news Beth. You did say the other day they had grown to about 8' tall. Now we will have to have updated photographs of your front garden
Ralph (Romeo) had his flower several years ago and he saved the seed and grew hundreds of baby cordylines from it. One is now sitting in my courtyard. I don't think they flower every year because I recall him mentioning that he had to harvest the seed from a friends cordyline last year. |

They are certainly hardy down here Sal, although I have got mine in a sheltered spot, but that's mainly to protect it from the winds.
They are planted out all along the seafront in Worthing but they wrap the tops through the winter, again I presume for the same reason. Here is a picture of Beth's front garden taken in 2001. You can see one of her cordylines clearly in this shot.

From what I can see salli it depends on the type of Cordyline you have, was looking at some from New Zealand and they seemed to be ok outside.
Cordyline banksii - The Forest Cabbage Tree It is unlikely that C. banksii from the North Island could survive the worst the British climate can do, but I think it's fair to say if you have grown C. australis successfully, whether planted out or put in a greenhouse or conservatory for the winter, you could grow C. banksii I was reluctant to believe this until this last winter, because it just doesn't look like a hardy plant, but last winter two out of three test plants left outside survived -8C. (However, having said that, my experience with all Cordylines in pots is that exposing them to the limits of their cold tolerance in the winter sets them back so they don't start growing again until the middle of the following summer. This coming winter I shall be burying the pots and crowns of my specimens in the greenhouse in polystyrene 'pasta'.) The Forest Cabbage Tree is not fussy in a pot but like most bold foliage plants it looks its best when fed well. It is used to a windy, rainy climate and in warm dry; still air inside it is susceptible to red spider mite. As I mentioned, the main problem with C. banksii is lack of availability. Burncoose and Southdown Nurseries, Gwennap, near Falmouth is the only nursery I know of that stock plants of C. banksii in the U.K. Graham Hutchins of County Park Nurseries, Wingletye Lane, Hornchurch, Essex, who is a New Zealand plant specialist, has had some of my micro-propagated plants. ![]() |

Salli mine is Cordyline Australis, I have links to Australia so I am quite loyal to that country. In the last two years it has shot up. I thought I was going to lose it last year, but thanks to this forum, people gave me tips on what to do with it, and its come on in leaps and bounds.
Thanks Pip for showing that picture of my garden, its that one in particular that the flower is forming. Its been the stronger of the two and someone said yesterday its more likely to be around 10ft tall now not 8ft. I'm so excited about this find, cannot wait to see it. Someone said the flower has a strong perfume, I don't know cos its the first year its flowered. I have had it in the garden about three years now and it was absolutely tiny when I first planted it. Salli they are very hardy. The only thing that made me think it was dying was all the lower leaves were dying off, so all I did really was to give them a little tug and they came away in my hands. Once the old leaves were taken off it gave it a kick start back to life again. So go for it girl, you've nothing to lose and like someone said they are fairly cheap to buy. If I can some seeds I can always send them to you. Beth |

C. australis seems to be very hardy here, some of ours have been outside in the garden for many years. They flower every year, the flowers having a glorious scent....much like lily of the valley....the bees love em! The fruits that follow are small white berries.
Once ours flowered the main stem divided up into several so now they are multi headed plants, each head producing a flower spike annually. AJ |

I have visited Graham Hutchins nurseries,, it is a work collegues Dad
, it is in his back garden ,,, real higgledy piggledy place and fabulous ,,, he has plants I have never seen before ,, got a couple in the jap area,,, now that reminds me must visit again this year and it is only 10 mins away ,, bonusFabulous garden Beth,, i have a large Cordyline too,, never wrapped it or anything,,, first few years in a pot , then put into ground. The only time I had problems with it was when we a had a particully wet winter, I think a lot of rain gets in the trunk and it starts to rot and holds it back,, like you I cut off all the yellowing leaves,, it dried out and was fine. They are stunning to look at , I adore them and yours is wonderful Beth. ![]() |

Wow, those piccies are great. Your front garden looks beautiful Beth (thx Pip) and the flowering cordyline is fab Paulene. Can't wait for mine to do that. Judging by all reports I shall have to try and make space for it in the border. Oh goodie, another big pot to plant up when I do!!

Hi Bryony, was nice chatting to you too..The purple one is Hesperis Matronalis (Dames Violet and Sweet Rocket are the other names for it). I sure wish I had had the digital camera when I had that garden, cant beleive how bad some of my pics were.

Good on you for asking about the "mauvy flower" Bryony. I got a hesperis matronalis as one of my 50 for 15 plants and was wondering what it was going to look like!
