There's a dramatisation on the telly tomorrow (Sunday). Really enjoyed the book series so hopefully, this will be as good.

Missed it on R4, Pens, so can't comment. I think you have to 'tune in' to the books though - I read the 1st one & couldn't get into it at
all. Kept waiting for something to happen then felt disgruntled when it didn't! Re-read it when I was having a sore day & was leaning over the worktop
- read it in one go & enjoyed it.
Just hope they stick to the book & not go off on tangents. Time will tell. I don't usually like watching a film if I've read the book previously as the film rarely seems as good somehow & the actors never seem to look like how I imagined them................... exception being One flew over the cuckoo's nest. |

I agree Jo, the trouble with films is that they have to 'praisie' the book into about 90 minutes. When a book is actually read out loud can take
about 10 hours!!

Well I've just watched it, and I thought it was very good. I thought the characters were well cast and the stories were very true to the books (I
particularly enjoyed "the dubious daddy"). I gather they are going to do a series next year which I will definitely watch.

I watched a fair chunk of it (before I fell off my perch
Hadn't read the book, though. The only case I can think of where I read the book first and thought the film was excellent - probably better - was Women in Love. But then Lawrence does wiffle on in a self-indulgent way that I find pretty irritating and IMHO he really needed a good editor. Oh, and I've seen some excellent Jane Austin dramatisations too - and she's one of my fave authors.

Managed to watch it today - fair enjoyed it too
I think it stood alone as a film but you'd lose a lot of the history if you hadn't read the books - ie ex-husband, baby etc. Maybe there'll be more in the promised series next year. Pauline - I'm a complete philistine but I can't get into Jane Austin at all I blame having Pride & Prejudice being drummed into me at school by
a teacher who could make any book as dry as sawdust. She did the same with Shakespeare - something else I've never read since leaving school.
Tried to watch one on the telly but it had that dozy bint of the Pirates/Carribean films in it & she has the sort of face I dearly want to slap so gave up & switched off Maybe I'll try again one day |

I watched it online last night and quite enjoyed it. I spent most of the programme waiting for something horrible to happen to her.
I haven't read the books but may well get the first one just to see whether I enjoy them as much as the TV version.

Slightly off topic, Jo: I found Shakespeare pretty uninteresting the way we got it at school. That was until I went on a school cinema trip to see Laurence
Olivier in Richard III - it's brilliant and very funny, well, it probably wasn't meant to be but Olivier's delivery and interaction with the camera
was magical. Well worth watching it if you can find it.

Jo!
Your 'dozy bint' comment reminded me of something someone (male) once said about Brigitte Nielsen - that she had a face 'only a mother-in-law could hate'. I'd post a link, but I got bored looking for a pic that was just of her face. Much of the joy of Austin comes in the little barbs she slides in that are easy to miss. In Emma many people think her father is portrayed as a harmless poppet. Despite the fact that he is described early on as 'unfit for any acquaintance, but such as would visit him on his own terms.' In other words, our Ms Austin is an accomplished b!tch when she wants to be, which is surprisingly often.
