One of which is a collection of Fucshia's. [Carnival Collection, from Van Meuwen, if you want to look them up.]
Can anyone tell me the easiest way to propogate from these please? That way I'll be able to offer some swaps next year.

Propogating Fuchsia's - Any tips? |

With us being "in-between" greenhouses this year, I succumbed to buying a few plants for a change.

I think Dawn is the lady you're looking for Beaver - no doubt she'll be along shortly.

Hi Beaver,
Just done 200 Potting compost 50% perlite 50% in a 5" pot Take tip cuttings (shoots with 2 open leaves and 2 just coming up, i get about 7-9 cuttings per pot then water but try not to get water on the cuttings, lable and cover with a plastic bag, blow it up and put rubber band around put in a warm shady area and they will root in 2-3 weeks, slowly open the bag over a few days, leave to grow on a while before you pot them on. Keep everything really clean or you will have trouble
This is a good site http://www.fuchsiaflower.co.uk/cuttingspage.htm

Ok, silly question.
Does the plant have to be mature? Or can I do this from day one?

Have a look at the website link dawn put in Beaver. Basically I have done them as soon as the cutting material was available. I have also rooted fuschias in
a glass of water before now!

As soon as you have about 3 leaf joints of new growth you can take the cutting (need to leave 1 leaf joint to grow on the plant ).
I have about 170 'mother plants' that is all they are for is to produce cutting material ! i strip them at the end of Sept of all their leaves and they produce a nice flush of new shoots in a few weeks, in the spring i harvest the new seasons shoots in the same way. |
