It is that time of year for me, when everything gets sorted and boy what a load of garden waste I end up with. The problem is how do you get rid of it?

Before you all say 'get a compost bin' I would like to ask - would you put 10 bin liners full of weevil laden compost in your compost bin?

Laying that section aside, during the past three weeks I have generated in the region of 40 bags of garden refuse, and I still have about 100' of border and the courtyard and side alley to clear, not to mention some old pots that need emptying out. I would need a garden full of compost bins to dispose of that lot.

In our area we are meant to dispose of our garden waste by purchasing brown paper bags that are about the size of a large pedal bin liner. I believe these cost approximately £1 each. The alternative is to make journeys to the tip with the inherent costs of fuel, carbon footprint etc etc.

In the village next to mine they supply garden wheelie bins, but the council has ruled this unnecessary in our area.

What arrangements does your council make for disposal?

Big green wheelie bins collected every fortnight, I get to use my neighbours as well as my own and that makes it easy to get rid of the waste. The council use the compost made from collections to use in the beds, baskets etc and all the floral work around the town.

When I first started on the garden I also went to the tip that is only about a mile away to get rid of more than 2 bins worth.

Do a midnight run just pop across the road and dump it in the sea, fish will like a bit of salad and weavel to eat

We have the same as Saph i.e. Big Green wheelie bins... but you can't put soil in them only green stuff. You can also buy extra brown bags if you need them. These bins and bags are also for all kitchen waste, paper and cardboard, and they are emptied once a fortnight.

Soil would have to be taken to the tip I guess (thats where I take it, but the tip is only a couple of miles from here)

We have the fortnightly green bins too, its for all recycleable waste thats turned into compost at the local tip and sold for about £2 a bag.

We compost most of it though ourselves and the green bin just gets filled with cardboard!

We can request larger bins at an small extra charge too.

My lot in Essex also have a big wheelie bin.

I chuck all mine on the compost heap regardless. All my grass, weeds, kitchen waste, ash, cardboard & anything rottable goes down the end of the garden. I never mix it or do anything to it. OH tips a trailer load of muck on it every so often & I dig out barrow loads of stuff & use it for everything! Very unscientific & not practical for a smaller garden but despite weeds in my pots I never have problems

We have brown 120 liter wheelie bins that are provided free of charge by the local council for garden refuse, including soil, weeds etc. In early spring (after pruning is completed) the council does a garden refuse run through the village. All branches, twigs etc, that have been bundled together and heaped at the end of the road are collected and disposed of.
In addition we have blue 240 liter wheelie bins that are provided free for all paper waste and black 120 liter wheelie bins for normal household waste. All tin cans, plastic wrappings, plastic bottles etc, are seperated and put into yellow plastic bags. Milk cartons, egg boxes, etc, are seperated and put into blue plastic bags. We have 2 glass containers at each end of the village where you dispose of your green, white and brown bottles.
All of this gets collected/disposed of in 2-week cycles. Black wheelie bins cost 404 Euros per year (approx 318 pounds).

We have to take our garden waste to the tip (which, at the moment is about two thirds of a mile away). If we want it collected we can buy green sacks at a pound (can´t find the pound sign on this keyboard

) a time. Needless to say, it is into the back of the car for us and off to the tip. At this time of the year it can be twice a week and Kev puts the back seats down so that there is lots of room for our compost sacks full of nasty waste. The ´good´stuff goes into one of our four compost bins.

I have a compostor as we are not allowed heaps here. It is insulated so that heat builds up and kills anything nasty, if it gets too dry I water it and I turn it about twice a year. We put in it all household organic waste except orange peelings and meats and bones, even the coffee grains go in. We separate all bottles and jars for the bottle banks, the same for paper, and cardboard and plastics and tin cans, light bulbs and batteries also have their own banks, all paint and empty cans, and any chemical has its own container at the local tip which is about 15 k's from here, also there you can find containers for old tyres and tyres with hulls on, places for washing machines, tv's, fridges and freezers. All wood has its own place and this is then made into wood pellets and sold for the boilers that use them. In my green wheely bin is just the rubbish that cannot be composted, meat bones, the containers for meats, baby nappies and ladies items, (these are not flushed but put in a special bag and disposed of) if you have them collected the compost then you will have to pay a very large yearly bill.

Edi to say all garden waste is put in a separate one and any nasties get put on the fire we have to get rid of the wood from all the shrubs and tress we have to prune each year.

We use the tip. The council charge £18 per year to take our garden waste, not sure if its fortnightly or monthly. We pay quite enough comunity charge without an extra £18 so we do it ourselves

Well it seems that I am in one of the worst districts for disposing of garden refuse. Only CA is in the same position. I wouldn't mind paying £18 a year for a collection Maggie, but then I do generate a fair amount of stuff and I certainly pay out more than that either in diesel or bribary

We can request a garden bin at a cost of around £22.00 a year I think which is collected fortnightly between, say, April and October. We don't have one.

I put any clippings in the dustbin. Its not very oftern we have enough to go to the tip but if we do we have one about 10 minutes drive away which takes garden rubbish.

We can buy three garden bags from the post office for around £1.50 which the council will then take away when the empty the bins.

Our council provides a large brown bin for collection fortnightly . On the other week they do a paper collection . As yet we have no glass collection or plastic or tins etc but we can dispose of glass and tins at the tip and shortly there will be a facility for plastic . We are very behind in recycling up here as it is a question of building facilities to recycle such things as cost of transporting them south it too prohibitive.

Edited to add that often we have too much brown waste to go in our bin so we just go round all the other bins and add to them as many neighbours do not generate as much as we do.

We seem OK here. Green bin for garden waste veggie peelings etc. Black box plastic bottles and tins. Another box for paper. Grey bin for everything else. My tip is only down the road so I guess I have the best of both worlds

Sounds like it's time to jump on the local council then Pip.

Recycling is all the rage now. We already had paper/metals/glass all seperated into supplied bags or boxes. Along with general collections in the black wheelie and garden waste in the green whelelie. Now they are doing cardboard and plastic in supplied bags.

Everything except the garden waste is weekly, that one's fortnightly.
