We live at the northern limit of this birds range, so we don't see them very often. This guy showed up about two weeks ago and was only around for a couple
of hours, So I was lucky to see him and get some pictures. He is about the size of the English blackbird, maybe a little bigger.

Superb! What a handsome chap too. Glad you were around to capture his photo. He looks a bit like one of our bullfinches with that fat beak.

Fabulous shots, Fenman!
I was thrilled to see one in my yard last year as well. It was the first one I'd ever seen. Saddly, it didn't stay around. It's such a beautiful bird. And the red on it's chest is absolutely brilliant red.

Oh WOW what great photographs you've both posted. I'd love to see one of those grosbeaks in real life.

Great pic Shirley. The one we saw was use to eating at a feeder. But he was not happy with the one we had which was very close to the window. We feed the
bigger birds a few feet away during the winter. Had I put food out at one of those feeders he might have stayed around for a bit.

Your shots are so great because you've managed to get his eye to show, which is so difficult when the head of the bird is black. I've tried to get
shots of the oriels we have in the garden but haven't been able to get one where the eye is showing.
Our grosbeak only stayed a day. He visited our bird feeder filled with black sunflower seeds that is just outside our kitchen window so I got a good look at him. I think the main reason he didn't stick around was because he was the only one and I'm sure he'd want to be off making more grosbeaks.
Isn't it so exciting to see a new bird around your home!

We don't have exciting birds like that in our garden, I'm most envious. Lovely!
