I live by the sea in sunny Blackpool & wanted a hedge for privicy so started planting in june & ive got 17 of my cherry laurels planted . At first I started watering them in sun light spraying the leaves, they seemed to love it! what I didnt know was the water would act as a magnifing glass & sure enough over the past couple of weeks there was/is a lot of brownness around the leaves.Ive since pruned most of the brownyleaves off & now new ones have started to grow back but now they have a brown tip/edge on the leaves, also they seem to be smaller & shriveled Is this down to them being watered in the sun when i first got them or are they still getting used to the soil & not established yet..Please Help!!!

If you are right on the coast then the problem is possibly salty winds. Lots of plants are offered up as suitable for coastal conditions but the very best of them take time to adapt.
The ideal way to nurture them is to have a windbreak on the seaward side of the hedge. Dependant on how bad the winds are you would possibly have to leave this in situ for about two years. As is usual for me I don't know the right name for the protector to use but it is available at garden centres etc. and can be bought in green and brown and is like a very heavy duty netting to allow filtration of the wind. A few sturdy stakes to staple it to and your all set up. A bit ugly whilst its there but I'm afraid its the only way to win.  |

Windbreak was the word I was trying to think of. How dumb can you get
 You need to have something that will allow a certain amount of wind to pass through but it needs to be filtered to break down the force of it if you are planning on planting further into the garden. I believe the rule is that the wind will pass over a solid barrier and protect plants to a distance of three times the height of the barrier, whereas if the wind is filtered it breaks it down completely and you can plant further away from the barrier. What makes you think I live on the coast in a fully exposed position  |
