In a coldframe would be ok salli as long as you cover it when there is a frost due but outside i wouldnt go there till the end of April/May.

Early June for outdoor planting up here in Yorkshire. It's those possible late frosts that are the problem.

Hi Sal,
You ask set half hardy seedlings outside to harden off? You don't mention what facilities you have for hardening off your plants. I try to keep them to a minimum of 4-8C (40- 45F). I also keep them on the 'dry' side, watering in the morning when necessary. Mines are in cold frames and cold greenhouses. If a weather forecast is given out for lower temperatures I place some fleece over them. Just a thought! have you considered making up some sort of temporary tent/cloche arrangement to offer protection. What I have seen some people do on the plots is make a poly tunnel arrangement. These made up of of lengths of pvc 19mm diam plumbers waste pipe to form the hoops, then drape polythene or bubble wrap over these. The beauty of such a system is; it can be dismantled, then stored for future use in years to come. Hope this has been of some assistance to you. . |

Great peeps thanks. I have 2 coldframes and 2 placcy greenhouses. The smaller placcy greenhouse can be brought out during the day and in at night.
At the moment, I have only hardy seedlings outside in the coldframes and the half-hardys and exotics are still indoors in the lounge by the window. Sounds like the bigger half hardys can be moved out to the coldframes now |
