To my mind Sal, it is either/or......
Depends what you are going to use them for; e.g. tip them out at about third pair of leaves for use in borders, or just leave them to grow on, for hanging baskets, i.e. the will grow long and dangly and droop down in your baskets. ![]() |

I do Sal, think they make better plants when they're bushy even in baskets. Yeah, would say third pair of leaves.

I have seen at least 2 different varieties in seed catalogues Jo, possibly more. The ones I grew last year and am doing again this year are Bidens ferulifolia. They are traily. Haven't tried any other kinds.

Thanks Sal,
Can't remember the name of the last ones I tried - but it said on the packet that they were for hanging baskets The flowers/leaves etc were identical to the ones that you see in hangers etc. but they just grew the wrong way jo |

Jo try this with your Bidens, its something I do with other species of plant.
Most plants want to climb up to the seek the light, so I put this trait to my advantage. I put these tallish plants in the bottom layer of my plantings. Initially the dangle down, then they bend and form a 'U' shape, and this formation gives width to your basket, plus the 'ferny' leaves mix with the other species in the basket, making your arrangement look a lot 'bushier'. One of my favourites in a basket is 'Gypsophila' it just makes the basket look so light and fluffy. Just think of what florists do!, don't they always try to get a bit in to a bouquet, for the very same reason? and isn't a basket, in effect, a big 'posy' of growing flowers?

The Bidens i grew last year & have them to grow again this year are Golden Eye. I tend to do what Scotia said & plant them near the bottom of the basket then they grow down then up
