Hedge ideas needed |

A friend of mine asked if I could suggest something unusual , easy to keep and not invasive for a hedge , the purpose of which being to screen off an unsightly next door garden. She wants something to grow to about 6 ft but does not want the usual hedging. I did make some suggestions but wondered if anyone could come up with something really unusual but not expensive to buy .

I think that you will find the 'unusual' to be expensive and probably not wholly suitable. The 'usual' have, after all, been tried and found adequate as hedging plants.
My choices would be Prunus lusitanicus variegata, Prunus laurocerasus or Fagus sylvatica. Peter

My current favourite is an informal hedge of a mixture of hedging shrubs, so you get different leaf colours, different heights, different textures and some that flower. And you don't have to clip it - just prune to taste.

rather nice escallonia hedge down at Kippford, Mac
 don't know the posh name, but the spotted laurel looks nice too - ours is looking good now after hacking it back to about 5' high a couple of years ago - it's now about 8' high & really thick! jo |

Look into Pauline's suggestion, Mac. As well as others of course. A mixed species hedge can look 'something different' even though individually they may be quite common.
Prunus cerasifera 'Pissardii' the purple leaved plum looks well interplanted with beech or crataegus and I'm sure others also. If you have can install a fence or horizontal wire support for initial vertical training the winter Jasminum J. nudiflorum goes very well with pyracantha or Chaenomeles japonica. Peter
