One way of losing weight Saph .... we have more chaffinches than sparrows up here and they inhabit every picnic area

Lovey pictures Saph, I just love Blue Jays, you captured them really well. Looking at
the pics again, I'm not sure they are blue jays but they do have the same or very similar markings.

Ever eager to please, I offer the following fruits of my research - some birds and their approximate sizes:
Jay (European) - 33cm:
Blue Jay (American) - 30cm:
Blackbird - 25 cm - this is a male:
Chaffinch - 15 cm - and this is a male too:
Now I always thought a chaffinch was much closer to a blackbird in size than that. Maybe the ones around here eat very well!

Spidey is really chuffed that you liked them, Saph.
But he forgot to mention that I particularly like the one of the blackbird too. And that your photographs are rather more accurate for colour than the drawing of the chaffinch. At least I'm fairly sure it's a chaffinch...

It's definitely a chaffinch, but the drawing colour leaves a lot to be desired.
Edited to add this bit of info I found here. I love the latin name. ![]()

Yes you are right it is a chaffinch. I wondered after I had posted if it was. I see a lot of Jays in our garden (stand
corrected about the name too, assumed they were blue jays) and it was difficult to judge the size of that lovely little bird.
