Damaged Plumtree. Alan B. 4/12/01.
I have an old plum tree that has cropped its heart out this year and also suffered a lot of damage because of it !!. A number of branch,s have snapped and I was wondering how they respond to a savage prune to make good the damage?? Anyone help?? Alan.

Pruning Prunus. Alan Gould. 6/12/01.
Pruning plums in winter can encourage the spread of silver leaf and other viral diseases, so leave it until early spring. Then cut out any diseased or damaged wood, also any branches which are spoiling the shape of the tree you want to finish up with. Older trees are better pruned in midsummer, but the spread of disease in cuts should always be borne in mind. Give the tree a chance to recover from a heavy crop and from vigorous pruning, i.e. dopn't expect a bumper crop next year, but its average output should increase if you look after it.
