Sussex, UK. Hanging Baskets.
Hanging Baskets are a big part of my gardening work. In early May I start filling them. I always use the potting compost plastic bags with the reverse side showing out as a liner and cut slits out ready for the baby plants. When I put the plants in I then get a small circle of the same liner with a slit in one side and wrap it hard against the inside of the basket where the slit is, I find this stops the escape of water during the summer. I always use Arthur Bowyers potting compost on all my hangers and summer tubs. I always like to do one or two what I call 'country baskets'. These are usually 12" wire baskets filled to overflowing with all the small cottage plants, each fighting one another for space. The result is usually a mass of different colours. The hardest part is getting a balance so that one plant doesn't dominate. In our front garden we have two large 'Mangers', which are fixed wall baskets, oblong in shape. We now always fill these with pelargoniums. Mainly the balcony type but with a few contrasting ones in the top. The theme is then carried on with a selection of tubs all around the front garden. We have a stump of an old shrub in the rear garden, about four feet tall, and I always fix a basket on top of this with a lot of trailing plants. Once it gets established it looks like a small flowering tree that no one can recognise. I am rather brutal with the basket plants once they start getting established by nipping the ends off for a few weeks until everything has bushed out well. It's difficult to do this when you see the flower buds coming but it pays in the long run. I will put a picture of one of our country baskets and our mangers onto the Gardeners Diary Album.
