Yeah, that's his white throat. Also notice the yellow spot by his beak. Are European sparrows the same as English or House sparrows? If so, this sparrow
is not only prettier, I think, but way less aggressive. House sparrows over here (and there are a lot of them) kill bluebirds and take over their nests. So
we don't like them here

What a fabulous picture, Julia!!! It seems the bird will hop across the screen, any minute.
I guess they don't come up this far. I've never seen one. ![]()

Another stunning picture of a lovely bird - I love its yellow eyebrows.
I had no idea that the European version - your English Sparrow / our House Sparrow - was such a little thug! Apparently they are more so where you are, though: ...though this tendency has occasionally been observed in its native habitats (particularly concerning House Martins), it appears to be far more common in habitats in which it has been introduced, such as North America. They've been in serious decline in N.W. Europe, and nobody really knows why, but this is interesting: Various causes for its dramatic decrease in population have been proposed, one of the more surprising being the introduction of unleaded petrol, the combustion of which produces highly toxic compounds such as methyl nitrite. The stuff I've quoted is from Wikipedia: the full article is here.
