It's in the conservatory which is warm with loads of light. I'm trying to stagger them this year so I don't end up with them all fruiting st the
same time.Oddly enough the two beafstaeks I planted around the same time are lagging behind. If it makes you feel any better I have damaged the growing tip of
the first cucumber so I need to wait for the others to germinate

Hi Kitty,
Are you sure your growing a Tomato and not a Triffid
30cm is huge... I started my 'Harzfeuer' and 'Moneymakers' back in early March. The largest have only reached 14cm.. http://umkraut.realgardeners.yuku.com/fs/view/fid/33302 I agree with plot - leave the flowers on... |

30cm is huge... . Must be having a good year so far... lost so amny to slugs last year. Will keep the flowers o... was just a nit
worried they might prevent more upward growth
D'ya wanno know how my fuchsia whips are doing??? I'm growing them to standards of varying heights and they are 'budding'..maybe need to post this in ornamental

Now I'm impressed Dawn
If your selling Toms in flower, have fruit on your chilli etc, etc .. Where do you live - Kew Gardens! How do you find the time for all of this - and take 5 dogs for 'walkies' twice a day

We had our last frost in late March Plot.
I lost 6 peppers (California Wonder) and old jack 'touched' about 20 of my Cayenne seedlings. However they seem to be recovering slowly. I just didn't believe it would get down to -4C inside the Greenhouse! Of course it was the only night I decided it wasn't necessary to cover up the seedlings with sacks
This is what differentiates us from the animal kingdom. They learn from their mistakes..... |

I'm not far away from Plot either, and this time last year we were free from frosts as well, I'd have known that if I'd had a crystal ball. Yet the year before that there was a frost at the end of May. So we might be clear and we might not be. Good this gardening lark, isn't it!!!! ![]()

Know what you mean Linda,
We have a 5-day period in May called the eis-heiligen (trans= Ice Saints). This year the 5-days fall on 11-15 May. Each day belongs to a different saint Mamertus, Pankratius, Servatius, Bonifatius and Sophie. The German Farmers Almanac says " Never plant out in May before the Ice Saints days have passed - otherwise you can never be sure of frost free nights". Personally, even though we have 25C weather at the moment - I'm waiting until 16 May before everything gets planted outside.... |

Very wise. Although I feel we have passed the frosts it was this warm in April last year only to be cold and wet in May
