I put my onion sets in last November, which is what they do here. I have two varieties, red ones and yellow ones. Now some of them are starting to have flower shoots - should I take them off? Is there something I should do which would stop them flowering? None of the books I have say anything about this, they just talk about waiting until the foliage starts to yellow. It seems to me that all the goodness in the bulb will go into the flower if I leave it - advice please

Yep they are bolting (going to seed) if you pinch out the flower stem while still small they will make a reasonable bulb, but won't store well so use them
up as you see them...

Thanks for the advice. I had a closer look and found that it was just the red onions that were starting to flower. So I've pinched out the stems and will
hope that they get to form a bit more of a bulb. If that doesn't work then next time I won't put the sets in until early Spring.

Do you think it makes any difference where you get the onion sets from? I buy mine from a man in the local market.
It's a natural tendency of course, to go to seed, I was just surprised that none of my books mention it as a possibility.

I am finding red onions in my flower beds! Last year, I ran out of space in the veggie bed and planted the surplus all around the place. They are popping up
amongst my flowers and are much larger and stronger looking than the sets that I planted out in the veggie bed this year. Gardening sure is interesting.
