You can get e-mails (proper e-mails, not messages in your Yuku inbox) about lots of things - or not get them if you don't want them. You can also get Yuku to send them if you want to make sure a friend sees a particular thing.

1 - Subscribing

You can subscribe to a topic, a forum, or an entire community - which means that when a new topic or reply is added you'll get an e-mail from Yuku with a link to it. (Hmm, for the whole of RG that would be around 140 e-mails a day. )

It's very useful, though, for keeping track of what's happening in a (not too active) forum you don't visit very often (like Yuku's Announcements), or if you're only interested in one particular topic in a very active forum (such as a Yuku help forum) and don't want to trawl through loads of stuff looking for it.

To subscribe to the whole RG community, click on the e-mail icon on the main forums page:

To subscribe to one of RG's forums, click on the e-mail icon on the main page for that forum:

To subscribe to a topic, use the "Click to receive E-mail notifications of replies" link underneath the "Quick reply" box:

Whichever you click on, you'll get this - specifying exactly what you're subscribing to (I've highlighted that bit in pink):

and all you need do is click on "OK" or "cancel".

To subscribe to a topic as you post, edit or reply to it, check the little box next to "Subscribe to this topic" before posting, and you won't even get the dialog box.

Before doing a quick reply:

Before doing a new post, standard reply or edit:

Note that, unlike the other little check-boxes, you only ever need to check this one once - if you check it again next time you reply or edit, you'll set up another subscription to the same topic! To remove surplus subscriptions, or ones you've finished with, read on...

To cancel subscriptions

To stop receiving e-mails connected with your subscriptions:

- click on the "Account" link at the top of the screen to get to your account control panel.
- in the Notifications block at the top in the centre column, click on "Subscriptions"

and remove any you don't want.

2 - Notifications

Apart from your subscriptions, you can be notified by e-mail about:

- Private messages
- Friend requests, and
- Comments (on your profile)

You can set the option to be notified or not for each of these:

- click on the "Account" link at the top of the screen to get to your account control panel.
- in the Notifications block at the top of the centre column, click on "Options".

3 - Bookmarks

You can get Yuku to e-mail a friend to tell them about RG, an RG forum, or a topic you want them to see.

Which it is depends on where you are when you click on the "Bookmarks" link - and where the link is depends on where you are at the time. Confused? Let's see if this helps:

To send a link to the RG community
(the main forums page), go to the main forums page and it's above "Meeting Point" on the right:

To send a link to a particular forum, go to the main page for that forum and it's underneath the list of topics, to the right:

To send a link to a particular topic, go into the topic and it's between the end of the last message on the page and the quick reply box, to the right:

Wherever you click on it, you'll get this popup menu:

And clicking on "Email" will take you to something like this, which I think is pretty easy to use:

I really do wonder how many people really send e-mails saying "Hey you should check this out." but that's what yours will say unless you change it.

You'll need to put in your friend's e-mail address but at least this way the link gets put in automatically.
